Dungeness is a bleak, exposed shingle headland and it’s that bleakness that has attracted many artists and holiday-makers wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. However, Dungeness is not only home to a huge landscape-dominating power station but also to a family who have fished here for generations.

Using their own boats, they sell what they have caught that day in their wet fish shop, and cook up some of it to serve in their neighbouring Snack Shack. You won’t taste fresher; you can see their fishing boats moored up on the shingle in the distance.

We were hungry when we visited, so watching Kelly prepare freshly cooked crab (caught by her brother) meant we just had to try their crab rolls. Also on the menu was a lobster roll with lemon and herb mayo, lemon sole and salad in a roll, hand cut chips and monkfish in a homemade flatbread with Mexican slaw. When we saw how delicious everything looked we couldn’t say no to a lobster roll and a monkfish wrap too. All of it was so fresh, sweet and tender that I’m ruined for seafood ever again!
